Dick Ainsworth: Photographs -
landscape and architectural images from the Driftless Area

Dick Ainsworth, "Door With Hook" Now on view at Green Lantern Studios is an exhibit of photographic work by Dick Ainsworth. It includes works in color, from modular installations of small prints to very large individual pieces, as well as a collection of black and white images.

Mainly shot locally, this show is centered on the disparate subjects of architecture and landscape. However divergent, imagery included in this show can be said to reflect the singular point of view of the artist. “These are things I see every day – things I like to look at in places that I love”, says Ainsworth. “They allow me to say ‘I was here’ by providing a window to where I’ve been.”

Dick Ainsworth PanoramicsThe bulk of Ainsworth’s shooting happens while he is passing through, going someplace, on the way. He is always alone when taking photos. By spending many hours or days in a setting, he comes to an understanding of the effect of light direction and intensity on his subjects. Revealing or subduing texture, establishing a specific mood, Ainsworth uses light to capture a sense of remoteness – whether emotionally or physically distant, or pointing to a moment past in time.

Ainsworth has always been interested in snapshots. His serious pursuit of photography developed as a means of enhancing his freelance writing endeavors. Directionally from there, editing led to technology, to computers and software. Technologically, Ainsworth is currently working with very special research-level equipment. He is exploring the process of multi-imaging – combining a number of individual shots in the computer to deliver virtually unlimited resolution. Ainsworth believes he has essentially added his photography to his in-depth knowledge of computers in an attempt to create “versions of things” he likes to look at. “I admit,” he says, “it’s a weird kind of pursuit of excellence”.

Dick Ainsworth: Photographs - landscape and architectural images from the Driftless Area will remain on view through October 12th.
